DIY Truck Brake Repairs

Blog

When it comes to the big stuff with your truck, it is best to have a professional mechanic take care of the truck repairs. But there are several do-it-yourself repairs you can easily do yourself, and many don't take much time at all. For instance, there are many common problems with brakes that you can do that will help to keep your repair bills down. Here are some of the most common brake problems, and how to fix them yourself.

Brakes Stick

It doesn't matter if you have a truck or a car, brakes sticking is a common problem with most vehicles. This is caused by a buildup of brake fluid and grease, and after a while, it is all going to get pretty sticky. You press the brakes, and they will stay depressed instead of releasing. This type of truck brake repair is simple. All you have to do is clean off the buildup with a degreaser. You may also need to replace any parts that have had too much fluid on them and can't easily be cleaned, too.

Brakes Squeal

Squealing brakes is usually due to the brake pads vibrating against the brake caliper. The best solution for this problem is to replace the brake pads and add a bit of grease to the pads to keep them from squealing later on. This is a repair that must be done as soon as you notice the problem to keep it from getting worse and leading to more expensive truck repairs.

Brakes Drag to the Side

If you notice that your truck pulls to one side whenever you brake, it could be one of many problems. The first thing to check is that the brake adjustments are the same on both sides of the vehicle. If this is not the problem, you will need to see a mechanic for truck repair, as it could be the steering wheel, wheel bearings, or the axle.

Brake Pedal Sinks

If your truck is older, you may find that the brake pedal sinks, and you really have to press hard to get your vehicle to actually stop. The first thing to do is to change the master cylinder. But, if the problem is still there after changing the cylinder, you will need to have more serious truck repairs done; otherwise you could end up in a very dangerous situation when your brakes won't work.
