How to Repair a Worn Wheel Bearing on Your Car

Blog

If you have worn wheel bearings, you may wonder how difficult it is to repair them and whether it's something that you can do yourself. Is this practical, or do you need to outsource it to an expert instead?

Understand What a Wheel Bearing Is

Before you dive into the process of repairing your car's wheel bearing, it's important to understand what the wheel bearing actually is. It is an assembly of steel balls and races that allows the wheels of your car to rotate smoothly and quietly. Without the wheel bearing, your car would experience significant vibration and noise while driving. So, in order for your car to run properly, it's important that you take care of any issues with the wheel bearing as soon as possible.

What Tools Do You Need?

The first step in repairing a worn wheel bearing is gathering the necessary tools and supplies. You'll need a socket wrench set, a wire brush for cleaning off rust or dirt build up on the inside of the hub and a rubber mallet for tapping out stuck parts. You will also need an axle puller for removing axle shafts from hubs, a torque wrench for tightening bolts when reassembling parts and a jack for lifting up one side of your vehicle so that you can access the wheel bearing. Once you have all these items together, you can begin the repair process.

How the Work Is Done

  • Lift one side of your vehicle using a strong jack so that you have access to the wheel bearing.
  • Remove any rust or dirt build up using a wire brush.
  • Remove axle shafts from the hub using an axle puller.
  • Tap out any stuck parts using a rubber mallet
  • Reassemble the parts and tighten bolts using a torque wrench
  • Lower the vehicle back onto the ground and test drive it.

What to Bear in Mind

You need to remember that some of these parts may be rather stubborn, and it's also quite tricky to remove the hub with the axle puller. Apart from that, you will need access to some of these specialist tools. fact, if you're not used to working in or around cars, such a job may appear to be quite daunting. This is why most people in your situation will outsource the work to an experienced mechanic. So before going any further, pick up the phone and talk with a technician for additional advice.
